Refinery plants are fed by 33 / 22 / 11 KV feeders from power companies & GT’s. The HV system is then segregated to few load blocks. The load block feed 6.6 / 3.3 KV systems. There may be tens of sub-stations & switch houses of 6.6 / 3.3 KV systems. This is further reduced to 415 volts down streamed system through hundreds of transformers to feed thousands of LT motors. The process also encompasses few HT motors.

The elaborate process from generation to distribution calls for appropriate Earthing system to protect various electrical devices, such as panels, UPS, VFD’s, Battery chargers, DVR’s, instrument control panels for columns, vessels, boilers, furnaces etc…

Many international & national standards like, IEEE 80-2000, BS-7430, IS-3043, Petroleum Rules – 2001, OISD – 110, OISD – 180, APIRP – 2003 are few of the guiding books.
